A Pain in the Ass and a Gift

"New York is a pain in the ass because there are so many of us walking around, bumping into each other, stealing each other's taxis. But it's also a gift. Because none of those people are faceless. Those thousand people you walk past every day? Every single one of them is on a journey. Every one of them simply wants to be loved and needed."

The Center of the Action

"Us New Yorkers have a complicated relationship with the place we call home. There's this joke we tell each other:  'I love New York—can't wait till they finish it!' There's always construction happening everywhere. Scaffolding that you have to walk around. Jackhammers you have to shout over. Smoke plumes rising out of manhole covers for no apparent reason. You can't live here unless you love being at the center of the action, but at the center of the action, it's usually loud and crowded and it smells like pee and pot.

One Percent

"Ninety-nine percent of your life in New York is going to happen in one percent of the city. And once you find the one percent that feels like home, the rest of the city might as well not exist. You want me to ride in a cab for seven whole minutes to meet you for dinner? Uh, too far. Out of my zone."
