"New York is always confirming its own imagery, in part because the imagery is mostly not the sort that is predicated on perfect light glinting off monuments. The Empire State Building and the figure of Prometheus above the Rockefeller Center skating rink endure in tourist-brochure shorthand, but they don't actually remind you of anything but themselves. New York is all pileup and fluke and babble; its imagery is ad hoc."
