Floating World

East River

"Manhattan is a floating world, too: buoyant as balsa, heavy as granite. The reason skyscrapers developed so easily on this spit of earth, I once heard, is that its foundation stone was strong enough to take any amount of drilling. You can still bruise your ego against Manhattan's rocky cheek."
Philip Lopate, The Place Within
