Shakin' and Jumpin'

"They really got it shakin' in Jamaica, Queens

Wall Street is dressing up in old blue jeans
They're jumpin' at the Garden for the New York Knicks
The Islanders and Rangers go their hockey sticks
The Bombers in the Bronx and the Mets at Shea
Giants and Jets are up and ready to play."
Curtis Stigers, New York is Rockin'

World-Famous Cultural Institutions

"A central irony of living in New York is that your proximity to world-famous cultural institutions is largely nullified by how arduous it is to actually get inside them. I’d often joke that there must be a German word for that particular New York experience whereby the moment you hear about some worthwhile attraction — the 'Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty' exhibit at the Met, 'Hamilton' at the Public Theater (let alone on Broadway) — you simultaneously understand that your chances of experiencing it have essentially vanished."

Tiring City

"New York is a tiring city. You see it on the faces of people in the subway, on buses, in restaurants and diners. Even those of us who don’t have to push carts, sleep on the streets, work twelve-hour shifts, live four to a room, or commute hours a day by bus or train, look tired. There’s just so much to take in. No wonder we seal ourselves off."
